News for the Months of December and January

December 13 - There’s something a little disconcerting about Christmas shopping and seeing people wearing shorts. It was 68 degrees today, an unusual warm spell. Although today is the actual birthday, last night we celebrated Allen’s dad’s 80th birthday at Lakewood Country Club.

December 17 - Trey was vomiting during last night and had a fever, so he stayed home and begged Terri to stay too. He slept all day, but Terri went to get his assignments from school. Kelsey and a guy from her class at school are preparing for the middle school talent show -- they are dancing the Russian dance from The Nutcracker Suite.  Kelsey is also doing a solo act - a high kick dance routine that she learned at dance class.

December 21 - Tonight as we were having dinner at a neighborhood Souper Salad, Allen’s car was broken into. The thieves smashed the driver’s front window and went straight for the center console and stole some valuable things.  Dallas Police refused to come out and take a report, saying that they can take a report over the phone for a “smash and grab.” Frustrating! There was broken glass all over the car and we will have to file an insurance claim (with a $1000 deductible) for the losses. Terri went to her church this a.m. and then went with Allen and the kids to his church.  It is bitterly cold outside but no precip. ...  yet.

Last night Terri and Allen went to a Christmas party for her Sunday School class.  The night before, we ate at one of our favorite places, Ali Baba’s.  This weekend we’ve tried to wrap up the holiday shopping and have enjoyed reading letters and cards from our friends.  SMU is closed all of this week so we are really looking forward to spending the time together as a family.

December 27 - Merry Christmas!  Believe it or not, Santa brought the kids a Nintendo Wii.  We were hoping that would not happen, but it did. It HAS been a lot of fun to play on, however.  After opening our gifts that morning, we went to Allen’s parents’ for lunch (we brought the green bean casserole) and gift opening, and then the kids played outside, in short sleeves! It was really warm, and yesterday actually made it to 83 degrees which broke a local record. Love this global warming.  On Christmas Eve we went to a family service at Terri’s church.

January 24 - There has been a LOT of press this past week about the girls basketball team at Trey’s school.  In a recent game, they lost 100-0.  The media has picked up on this and a small, local sports story has been getting more press than the Dallas Cowboys did all season long.  It’s almost as if there wasn’t even an inauguration or something this week. Speaking of basketball, at Kelsey’s school, her team had two games this past week and won one and tied the other.  She is getting better and better at the game and we are really proud of her. Trey had final exams this past week and did pretty well and we are proud of him too. Today Terri and Kelsey went shopping for an outfit for Kelsey to wear when her class takes a field trip to Medieval Times.  Trey and Allen went to Su Vino Winery to make a batch of amarone wine.

January 31 - Well, the outfit shopping yielded no results, so Terri is going to try to create a Middle Ages look for Kelsey.  There is a severe outbreak of the flu at SMU, so Allen finally got a flu shot.  Trey opted for FluMist and was glad to avoid a needle! Today Allen and Trey were at an Advance-O-Ree for Boy Scouts and Trey completed a merit badge or two. Terri began working on a dress she is sewing for Hawaii.  All four of us are going to Honolulu for Spring Break.  Kelsey’s basketball team won both of its games this past week. She had an impressive interception in one of them.  Terri is pricing tacos for the Girl Scout dance on Feb. 7th that she is in charge of.

February 1 - Kelsey attended her first confirmation class today after church.  It was a parents’ meeting too so we were there.  This year’s group has 6 girls and 2 boys. For this month, plus March and April, they have a VERY full schedule. Trey attended a Super Bowl watching party with the youth group at church. It was around 70 degrees today so we got to spend some time outside walking around the neighborhood.
