This page records the birth of Allen and Terri Gwinn's second child. Kelsey Leigh Gwinn was born September 20, 1996 at 7:50 pm at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.
We knew ahead of time from a sonogram (prompted by an abnormally high AFP test result) that Kelsey had a birth defect known as an omphalocele. An omphalocele is an abdominal wall defect. Click here for a more technical definition. In Kelsey's case, her liver and intestines formed in a sac on the outside of her body during Terri's pregnancy. Terri did NOT have an amniocentesis and did NOT have to see a perinatologist. We were told that an omphalocele is a life-ending condition if not surgically corrected immediately after birth. A neonatal staff and pediatric surgeon were present at the delivery in the LDR suite, where Terri's labor was induced at term (she did NOT have a C-section), ready to prepare the baby for surgery as soon as she was born. Everything was successful, and twenty days after her birth, Kelsey was well enough to come home.

In January 1999, Kelsey developed complications of this birth defect. See Kelsey’s Crisis for a story and photo history.
